Strass is the original full lead crystal range and has the most variety. Most of these items will also include a small laser engraved trademark in the shape similar to a trapezoid close to the hole. The location of this mark is often indicated in the drawings by a red dot. Note that only newer and clear coloured items are marked. Strass items are also coated with a substance that repels dust and reduces watermarks. The "Spectra" range is made of optical glass. Although not confirmed by Swarovski, it is assumed that a limited range of designs are produced to combat the development of cheaper alternatives offered by other producers. Spectrum is almost half as expensive as Strass. Swarovski has adopted a policy of phasing out designs that were not protected by copyright laws and replaced or created new items in the Strass range that are copyright protected. To most, there is no significant difference in the quality of cut or spectrum of light produced between both groups. We have identified the difference of these items by the starting number of the code with Strass items starting with an 8, and the Spectra items starting with a 9. We also often refer to the Spectra items in the description as being of “alternative Quality” |
