Files for arct clay silver come in two grades, fine and medium. You should use both of these, not just one. Start with using the medium first and once all the work has been done you use the fine to remove any deep marks the medium file has made. After that, you would move to sand paper. It is suggested in the literature that you should use 600 and 1200 grid paper. However, I find that that is way to fine to start off with on raw clay since it blocks the grid very quickly. I get some 360 or 400 grit paper (wet&dry) from the local hardware store and use that first.
